Purchasing A New Home? 2 Tips On Designing The Landscaping

by Warren Garcia

If you are purchasing a new home, you want to do everything you can to ensure the home is perfect for you and your family. Once you get everything inside done, you can move your attention to the outside and design your landscaping. The exterior of your home is the first thing people see when they drive up so you should do what you can to make the landscaping beautiful. Below is more information about this so you can be proud of your home.

Learn About Your Yard and Climate

Before you start designing, you need to learn about your yard and your climate. Have your soil tested to ensure that what you plant will grow well for you. Your soil may be fine, but it also may be lacking in nutrients. Know what zone you live in. You can do this by looking at the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. This shows you the average temperatures a flower or plant that you plant can grow well in. For example, some flowers will not grow well if you live in a hot climate.

Once you know your soil and your climate, determine where you will be planting in your yard. Once you do this, you need to know how much sun the different areas receive. Different flowers have different sun requirements. Where water drains in your yard is something else that is important. You do not want a lot of water draining onto your flowers or plants each time it rains. A landscape designer can advise you in all these options, to help you develop a beautiful yard.

Choose Hardscaping

Hardscaping is the part of landscaping that is nonliving. For example, hardscaping would include things like a water statue, a stone wall, a brick patio, a gazebo, and more. All of these things can add an extra element to your landscaping. A water statue makes a great focal point and you can find them in a variety of shapes and sizes. A brick patio is beautiful and can be inexpensive, depending on the size. Once you build the patio you can put patio furniture like a table, chairs, and more on it.

Landscape lighting is another part of hardscaping. This type of lighting will light up your landscaping at night. How you design the lighting is important, however, so you may want to consider hiring a professional landscape designer to help you. You can put in spotlights which will put the focus on a main area of your landscaping, such as a flower garden, a statue, etc. You can put lights in your trees, along your driveway, or along a path. You will likely need the help of an electrician as well if you choose this.
