Cleaning Up Your Own Backyard

Storm Damage - Check Your Trees

by Warren Garcia

Severe thunderstorms can quickly come up during the summer that can bring high winds and torrential downpours. This type of weather can easily break tree limbs and uproot entire tree trunks. When you are surveying the aftereffects of the storm, make sure that you pay attention to the trees that are on your property. Damaged trees could cause additional property damage and even injuries and death if they were to fall later. Here are a few steps you may want to take:

Assess The Damage

Survey your trees to look for any visible damage that may have been caused by the storm. Look for cracked or broken limbs that may still be suspended in the canopy of the damage trees or those that surround it. If it is a large limb, call a tree removal service to retrieve the limb before it causes injury or property damage.

Look to see if trees have fallen on, or have damaged power lines that run through your property. If you find trees on the line, or lines that were damaged in the storm, immediately call your power company and report it. They will send a crew to clean up the tree and repair the line. Do not attempt to do so yourself as the line may still be live and you will run the risk of injury.

Know Your Limits

While you may have the ability to clean up, or cut down, small limbs or small damaged trees, large trees are best left to a tree removal service. Sometimes soil erosion caused by the storm can cause the weight of a tree to shift, lean, or fall, even after the storm is over.

Make sure that you wear protective gear and work with equipment that you are comfortable working with. The last thing you want is an injury caused by your cleanup efforts.

Call An Arborist

Not every tree removal service has a professional arborist on staff. Many of them are simply staffed with workman who knows how to cut and remove trees. An arborist will be able to offer you a lot more than this. They are trained to evaluate and care for the entire health of your trees. In doing so, they not only will look at the damage that has been caused by the storm, but they will also be able to do the following:

  • Tree Pruning
  • Tree Removal
  • Identify Parasites
  • Insect Control
  • Lightning Protection
  • Emergency Tree Care and more

An arborist will be able to provide you with the complete package that you will need to not only clean up your damage but to restore the health back to your yard and trees.
