Cleaning Up Your Own Backyard

4 Affordable Ways To Decorate & Change The Look Of Your Pergola

by Warren Garcia

If you have a pergola in your backyard, here are a few easy ways that you can decorate and change the look of your decorative pergola without spending too much money.

#1 Paint It

One of the easiest ways to change the look of your pergola is to paint it. When you paint it, make sure that you use a paint that is designed for exterior use, not interior use. This type of paint will stand up to changing weather conditions and will not wear down as quickly as interior paint. Additionally, many exterior paints contain chemicals that fight against the growth of mold and mildew on exterior structures such as your pergola.

If you like the wood look of your pergola, you can also stain it. You can use a different colored wood stain to change its look.

Regardless of which method you choose for changing the look of your pergola, you are going to want to put down plastic on the ground to ensure that you don't get paint or stain all over the ground around your pergola location.

#2 Add Curtains

Another way to really change the look of your pergola is by adding curtains. Curtains can add color to your pergola and also give it a sense of privacy. They can also be a great way to protect yourself from the sun if your pergola is located somewhere that gets a lot of sunlight.

You can use outdoor or indoor curtains. If you use indoor curtains, just be sure to wash them frequently and take them down during the winter time. You can install curtain rods across the beams of your pergola for your curtains. You may also want to put in clips on the side that will allow you to pull and hold the curtains open. Choose colors that match with your garden if you want your pergola to blend in or choose playful colors if you want it to stand out.

#3 Use Planters

Next, another great seasonal way to add color and interest to your pergola is by adding planters. There are lots of ways that you can use planters. You can set plants around the base of your pergola, or you can install hooks so that you can hang baskets from the corners or even from the top of your pergola. This is a nice and simple way to bring the outdoor feeling over to your pergola.

#4 Lawn Furniture

Finally, if you have lawn furniture already, consider bringing it over to your pergola. Placing lawn furniture under your pergola can make it feel like a more intimate hangout area, almost as if you have a living room in your backyard. It is a great way to change the feel of the space using materials that you already have.
